Does Online Speech Therapy Work? Answer: Yes!
We get it. You might be skeptical.
When most people think of Speech & Language Therapy, they imagine a small clinic room, a box of toys, and a therapist sitting on the floor with their child.
So when you hear “Online Therapy” (or Teletherapy), you might picture your toddler staring blankly at a laptop, or your teenager awkwardly trying to talk to a stranger on a screen.
You are likely wondering:
- “How can you do therapy if you aren’t in the room?”
- “My child won’t sit still for a video call.”
- “Is this just a stop-gap until ‘real’ therapy becomes available?”
The short answer is: Online Speech Therapy is not a “Plan B.” For many families, it is actually the most effective way to see progress. Here is why.
1. It’s Not “Just Zoom” – It’s Clinical Practice.
Online therapy isn’t just chatting over video. It is a recognised clinical delivery model backed by over 40 years of research.
Studies from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) have consistently shown that teletherapy outcomes are equal to (and sometimes better than) in-person therapy for articulation, language delay, and stuttering.
The clinical techniques are the same; only the delivery method has changed.
2. “My Child Won’t Sit Still!” (The Toddler Myth)
This is the number one worry for parents of children aged 0–4.
Here is the secret: We don’t expect your toddler to sit in front of a computer. In fact, we don’t want them to!
For our Early Years clients, we use a Parent Coaching Model.
- You play with your child on the floor.
- We watch via the camera (positioned on a shelf or table).
- We guide you in real-time via an earpiece or speaker: “See how he reached for the car? Pause now. Wait for him to look at you. Now say ‘Car’!”
This empowers you to become the expert. Instead of your child getting 45 minutes of therapy once a week, they get therapy every time you play with them, because you have learned the skills.
3. The “Comfort of Home” Advantage
In a traditional clinic, a child enters a strange building, smells strange smells, and meets a stranger. They often clam up. We can spend the first 20 minutes just trying to get them to relax.
Online, they are on their home turf.
- They have their own toys.
- They are wearing their comfortable clothes.
- They feel safe.
When a child is relaxed, their brain is ready to learn. We often see children speaking more in their first online session than they would in a face-to-face clinic visit, simply because they are comfortable.
4. For Teens: It’s Less “Awkward”
Teenagers often hate the stigma of being pulled out of class or sitting in a “medical” waiting room.
Online therapy happens in their bedroom, on their terms. It feels more like a FaceTime call or a Discord chat—formats they are already experts in. This reduces anxiety and helps them open up faster.
5. What do I need?
You don’t need a fancy tech setup. To get started, you just need:
- A Laptop or Tablet (Phones work, but a larger screen is better).
- A decent Internet Connection (If you can watch Netflix, you can do therapy).
- A quiet space.
The Bottom Line
Online therapy skips the commute, skips the waiting room, and skips the waiting lists. But most importantly, it delivers results.
